What Is Literacy?
Literacy incorporates Reading, Writing, and the Language Arts.
Reading.
Reading includes decoding, fluency, & reading comprehension; everything from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." |
Writing.
Writing includes all aspects of the craft, both fiction and nonfiction; planning and executing all steps of an essay for school; brainstorming for creative writing assignments, revising, editing, etc. |
Language Arts.
Language Arts includes making it all come together, or Executive Functioning; being organized - creating plans, basically the “behind the scenes” stuff to becoming an organized student, able to execute any and all tasks, literacy based or otherwise. |
Who Can Brooklyn Reads Help?
Beginning Learners - grades 1-3.
- Beginning learners are learning how to read and write. Students are beginning to understand that not only do letters have unique sounds, but when put together these letters create words, and these words have meaning. Each of these steps is hard, and support is sometimes needed to make this process happen. I am familiar with, and I can use, the Orton Gillingham PAF program as well.
Emerging Learners - grades 3-5.
- Emerging learners are switching from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” I provide a much stronger focus on reading comprehension. I help students learn how to approach and read non-fiction texts, and how to craft written work.
Expert Learners - grades 5-8.
- As students move through middle school, the demands on close reading, polished writing, and better organization increase. For those who are applying to high schools, I have helped numerous students navigate both the ISEE testing process and application essays.
High School Learners.
- I provide assistance with comprehending and engaging in more complex texts, and writing evidence based essays based on those texts. I have also supported many students as they study for standardized tests and write their college admissions essays.
Brooklyn Reads is conveniently located at 195 Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights, steps away from all subway lines and many local schools.
